Electrical Engineering · Protection Systems · Power

I connect field experience with electrical engineering.

I work with electrical systems and protection, and I am studying for an engineering degree at ENSEEIHT alongside my role at EDF.

01 / Profile

An engineering practice shaped by operating environments.

My name is Patrice Masson. For more than fifteen years, I have worked in the energy sector across hydroelectric operations, electrical systems, protection and control systems.

After field operations and technical expertise, I now work in professional training at EDF. I am building on that experience through engineering studies in energy, electronics and automation at ENSEEIHT.

Understanding systems, making them reliable and sharing how they work: this is the thread running through my work and studies.

02 / Expertise

From system diagnostics to technical training.

Three areas where operations, protection systems and learning come together.

01

Electrical systems

Understanding installations and their operating constraints.

  • Medium- and high-voltage networks
  • Hydroelectric plants and substations
  • Electrical diagnostics and fault analysis
  • Installation safety and availability
02

Protection & automation

Testing, setting and evolving critical functions.

  • Digital protection relays and SEPAM
  • Protection settings and relay testing
  • Trip logic and electrical schematics
  • Control and automation modernisation
03

Technical training & knowledge sharing

Making complex systems easier to understand and apply.

  • Technical training for technicians
  • Applied protection-system teaching
  • Simulations and practical exercises
  • Technical project coordination

03 / Selected projects

Engineering close to day-to-day operations.

Hydroelectric modernisation, continuity of service and protection-system commissioning.

Other work

2013–2022

Field inspection & troubleshooting

Protection checks, electrical diagnostics, on-call troubleshooting and technical recommendations across hydroelectric plants and substations in southwest France.

2022–present

Protection expertise & training

Hands-on exercises and technical training that support technicians’ understanding, autonomy and safety.

04 / Journey

From operations to training, then engineering studies.

A professional path shaped by working alongside installations and technical teams.

  1. Hydroelectric operations

    EDF Hydro

Field work, diagnostics and operating procedures. I built my first foundations in electrical safety and automation.

  2. Electrical inspection and protection systems

EDF Hydro · Enedis from 2017

Maintenance, settings, fault analysis and relay testing at hydroelectric plants and high-voltage substations.

  3. Technical training and protection systems

    EDF UFPI · Toulouse

Training and protection-systems expertise, developing practical exercises and coordinating training projects.

  4. Engineering studies alongside my professional role

    ENSEEIHT · 3EA

I am developing my knowledge of electrical engineering, electronics and automation, linking academic work with industrial experience.

05 / International & interests

Curious about people, places and different ways of working.

These interests reflect my curiosity while remaining distinct from my professional work.

Languages & mobility

Keep learning beyond familiar surroundings.

I am continuing to learn languages and would like to enrich my engineering path with experience in an international environment.
